Psychology of political discourse on social media and online news: Three insights from behavioural data science
prof. Łukasz Walasek, University of Warwick
It is now easier than ever to access large volumes of text data published online. In combination with the latest computational methods, these data offer an unprecedented opportunity for behavioural scientists to study individuals and group dynamics of people’s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours. In this presentation, I will summarize results from three papers, which all combine natural language processing methods with data obtained from online news media and Twitter. First, I will show how geo-political events relate to the psychological distance expressed in the concreteness/abstractness of written language. Second, I will illustrate how corpora of news stories can be used to study media representation (and biases) pertaining to presidential candidates in the US election of 2016. Finally, I will present recent results of a study investigating the dynamics of polarization on Twitter in the period leading up to the Polish presidential election of 2020. All three papers will showcase the value of behavioural data science methods for providing a novel way of testing and extending existing psychological theories in the context of significant real-world phenomena.
